Despite the pandemic effect and the repercussions of the U.S. sanctions, Huawei took home five awards at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress 2021.

The five categories of GSMA GLOMO awards that Huawei won include “Best Mobile Network Infrastructure”, “Best Mobile Innovation in Emerging Markets,” “Best Innovation for COVID-19 Pandemic Response & Recovery,” “Best Mobile Innovation for the Connected Economy,” and “Outstanding Mobile Contribution to the UN SDGs.”

The five awards won by Huawei prove that the Chinese vendor is still very important to a healthy market. Its innovation and business stability have been recognized by the industry. “Huawei’s wins are an important indicator for the global nature of the supply chain, regardless of the restrictions caused by the pandemic or geopolitical challenges,” according to Dimitris Mavrakis, Research Director from ABI Research. “We expect Huawei to continue to innovate in the technology and commercial domain and highlight its achievements in industry awards and other initiatives.”

In addition, the awards confirm the recognition of Huawei’s technologies in the global market, Huawei officials said. The demonstrations of these solutions at MWC 2021 proved how Huawei has utilized cutting-edge technologies to bring greater values to society, the officials added.

Huawei’s BladeAAU Series won the “Best Mobile Network Infrastructure” award for its innovation in which it integrates Massive MIMO AAU and full-band passive antennas in the most compact way helping global operators simplify site deployment and also address the space challenges associated with 5G network deployment.

According to Huawei, the solution has been successfully deployed in more than 30 commercial networks around the world helping operators in countries like China, Switzerland, France, Finland, and Ireland quickly launch 5G.

“Huawei BladeAAU Series stands out as a vital enabler for operators deploying 5G, ensuring support for commercially important spectrum in the years to come in a single form factor that reduces CAPEX and OPEX costs. Wide-scale global deployment of the product in more than thirty networks provides evidence of market momentum and broad positive impact on 5G deployment,” the judges of GLOMO Award said.

Huawei RuralStar Pro Solution was awarded “Best Mobile Innovation in Emerging Markets” and 5G telemedicine solution developed by the China-Japan Friendship Hospital based on Huawei’s 5G network solutions was awarded “Best Innovation for COVID-19 Pandemic Response & Recovery”.

Commenting on these awards, Huawei officials said, “Huawei has continuously innovated, making outstanding exploration in emerging markets, creating outstanding social value.”

Huawei RuralStar Pro Solution can address the problem of low infrastructure level, the lack of stable energy supply and transmission, and the low installation and maintenance efficiency in some emerging markets, Huawei said. Over 20,000 RuralStar base stations deployed worldwide to provide MBB and voice services, bridging the digital divide in rural areas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the solution largely helped authorities in the remote areas to ensure network coverage for enabling online classes and other criticial services.

In January 2021, China Unicom deployed the simplified rural coverage solution RuralStar Pro in Guizhou’s Maopo village. In Africa, the solution has enabled mobile financial access in areas not covered by traditional banks, thus speeding up the delivery of subsidies to those in need and raise donations for disaster relief.

“Huawei RuralStar Pro Solution serves as a great example of how different technologies are combined and optimised to address the specific challenges of rural deployments, with huge potential across developing countries,” according to the judges of GLOMO Award.

5G Telemedicine Solution, which has won “Best Innovation for COVID-19 Pandemic Response & Recovery,” Award helps improve healthcare delivery, especially in pandemic situations. The China-Japan Friendship Hospital was one of the first hospitals to pilot 5G networks. With the use of Huawei’s 5G network solutions, it has been leveraging 5G to improve patient services and bring digital remote auscultation to various ICU wards and primary hospitals. The 5G telemedicine solution also assists more than 5,000 hospitals across China conduct remote consultations, CT examinations, and type-B ultrasounds, helping them to treat COVID-19 patients efficiently.

Digital auscultation is a promising telehealth application in 5G era. In February 2020, digital auscultation helped the emergency medical team in the China-Japan Friendship Hospital to acquire the pulmonary sounds of critically ill COVID-19 patients. The near zero latency of 5G connections enabled the hospital to send the sound to the central platform in real time for further AI-based multi-discipline analysis. This made it possible to diagnose edema as the main characteristic of the pulmonary sounds of COVID-19 patients, providing valuable clinical references for treatment, Huawei officials said.

Leveraging Huawei’s 5G Telemedicine Solution, the hospital also developed other telemedicine applications, such as combined ultrasound consultations, ultrasound needle knife operations, and pathology consultations. 5G enabled ultrasound devices at bedside or in the operating rooms connect to the central platform, allowing specialists to provide guidance and training to doctors at other hospitals. This helped to resolve the shortage of specialists and minimize their flow between hospitals, reducing the risks of cross-infection, the company said.

The 5G-inspired smart grid project jointly launched by Huawei, China Southern Power Grid (CSPG), and China Mobile was awarded “Best Mobile Innovation for the Connected Economy” award. The CSPG project, according to Huawei, is the world’s first commercial 5G private WAN for the electric power industry. It has helped CSPG divide its power network into two physical network slices — the power production and control area and the management and information area.

Finally, the joint project, “Nature Guardian” by the Rainforest Connection (RFCx) and Huawei was awarded “Outstanding Mobile Contribution to the UN SDGs”.

The annual GLOMO Awards were set up to recognize pioneering feats of mobile technology.  At the backdrop of the COVID 19 pandemic, these awards also gain significance as they recognized technologies that help communities stay connected and empower authorities to deliver critical services during disasters. By winning five awards in these categories, Huawei has once again demonstrated the company is at the forefront of technological advancements despite the several challenges it has confronted in the recent past.
