CommScope to acquire small cell vendor Airvana

CommScope solutions for telecoms

CommScope announced its deal to acquire Airvana, a provider of small cell solutions for wireless networks.

Financial details were not disclosed.

Recently, CommScope acquired TE Connectivity’s telecom, enterprise, and wireless business.

Chelmsford, Massachusetts-headquartered Airvana provides 4G LTE and 3G small cell solutions to improve indoor coverage. Since its founding in 2000, Airvana has shipped 1.5 million small cells and supports one of the largest small cell networks in the world.

The strategy of CommScope is to expand its capabilities in providing indoor wireless capacity and coverage. The combination of Airvana’s small cell offerings and CommScope’s distributed antenna systems (DAS) portfolio will enable CommScope to provide a range of solutions.

CommScope leads the global DAS market with 17 percent market share.

“Airvana has differentiated itself in the indoor small cell market through its product architecture and innovation,” said Morgan Kurk, senior vice president and Wireless segment leader, CommScope.

CommScope’s ION-E solution and Airvana’s OneCell Cloud RAN small cell system will comprise a full range of cost-effective solutions that address all the indoor wireless challenges customers face.

Senior Airvana team members including CEO Richard Lowe, co-founder and chief technology officer Vedat Eyuboglu, and existing employees — in Chelmsford, Mass. and Bangalore, India, will join CommScope.

Nokia Networks recently said its small cells enabled China Mobile, the largest telecom operator in the world, to support 1 million visitors at Auto Shanghai 2015. Nokia Networks has deployed its TD-LTE Advanced HetNet solution to enable China Mobile Shanghai’s network at Auto Shanghai 2015. Nokia Flexi Zone small cells complement Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Stations, with each supporting 600 simultaneous active TD-LTE users per cell.

CommScope will keep the headquarter of Airvana in Chelmsford, and will operate within CommScope’s Wireless segment.
