In a regulatory move aimed at safeguarding competition within the UK market, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced on Friday that it is closely examining Qualcomm’s acquisition of Israeli automotive chip manufacturer Autotalks.
The investigation comes in response to concerns that the acquisition may diminish competition in the UK market, potentially impacting the automotive technology sector.
The deal, which was publicly disclosed in May, involves Qualcomm’s intent to acquire Autotalks, a renowned manufacturer of chips utilized in crash-prevention technology for vehicles. However, specific details regarding the terms of the acquisition have yet to be revealed.
Autotalks specializes in creating dedicated chips used in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communications technology, catering to both manned and driverless vehicles. This acquisition is viewed as a strategic move by Qualcomm to bolster its presence and capabilities within the automotive industry, enhancing its position in the emerging V2X communications technology sector.
Autotalks, a fabless semiconductor company with a focus on V2X communications since its inception in 2009, offers automotive qualified dual-mode global V2X solutions compatible with various V2X standards. These solutions are designed to mitigate collisions and enhance overall mobility.
The merger of Autotalks’ extensive expertise and industry-leading products with Qualcomm’s 20 years of experience in the automotive sector is expected to accelerate the development and adoption of V2X solutions, ultimately improving traffic efficiency and enhancing driver and road user safety.
As part of the acquisition, Autotalks’ production-ready, dual-mode standalone safety solutions will be seamlessly integrated into Qualcomm Technologies’ expanding Snapdragon® Digital Chassis product portfolio—a comprehensive array of cloud-connected automotive platforms.
This move has attracted scrutiny not only in the UK but also in the European Union (EU) and the United States. Last month, EU regulators made it clear that Qualcomm must seek antitrust approval for the planned takeover. Additionally, reports from Politico indicate that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is expected to initiate an in-depth investigation into the acquisition, underlining the global significance of this acquisition and the implications for the competitive landscape in the automotive technology sector.
