MWC 2014: Broadcom demos wearables, LTE, 5G Wi-Fi 2×2 MIMO, NFC, location technology

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014, chip vendor Broadcom announced it is demonstrating wearables, LTE, 5G Wi-Fi 2×2 MIMO, NFC and location technology.

These new innovations are designed to improve overall device performance, extend battery life and deliver a superior experience for today’s mobile lifestyle, said Broadcom at MWC 2014.

“Broadcom’s mantra is to connect everything,” said Bob Rango, Executive Vice President and GM, Mobile and Wireless Group. “The innovations we’re demonstrating this year further underscore our ability to do just that, wirelessly.”

Broadcom announced the industry’s first 5G WiFi 2×2 MIMO combo chip for smartphones, which doubles wireless performance while improving power efficiency and range.

The company also introduced a family of NFC controllers, providing OEMs with highly integrated, low-power solutions that can be easily incorporated into a broad base of mobile devices.

Broadcom is showing a range of LTE innovations at the show. The company’s new turnkey reference design, targeted at the sub $300 LTE smartphone market, enables handset companies to quickly and efficiently develop a portfolio of affordable 4G LTE mobile devices.

In addition, Broadcom is showing technology that could deliver LTE Advanced carrier aggregation Category 6 data rates of 300 Mbps, a significant milestone that delivers 2x the speed of the fastest LTE generally deployed today.

Broadcom is bringing its location expertise to deliver a new GNSS chip for wearables that enables more precise fitness and health measurements to this accelerating market.

In addition, Broadcom’s 5G Wi-Fi location awareness technology will be demonstrated on a joint development platform with Aruba Networks, providing accuracy within indoor environments such as retail, healthcare and hospitality.
