Samsung smartphone Q4 2013 market share surges to 40.4%, Micromax dips to 15.7%

Samsung smartphone market share in India increased to 40.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013 from 33.9 percent in the third quarter of 2013, while Micromax share dipped to 15.7 percent from 19.7 percent and Karbonn increased to 11.1 percent from 9.5 percent.

But Micromax has done extremely well in 2013 as compared with 2012.

For instance, Samsung dropped its smartphone share to 37 percent in 2013 from 43.1 percent in 2012, while Micromax increased smartphone share to 18.6 percent from 7.6 percent, according to CMR’s India Monthly Mobile Handsets Market Review, CY 2013.

Micromax smartphone share decreased despite its new launches and marketing supports during the festival season in the fourth quarter.

In 2013, smartphone makers such as Nokia with 13.3 percent market share in 2012, Sony Mobiles with 8.2 percent and BlackBerry with 7.5 percent disappeared from the top 3 list. Karbonn became #3 and Micromax #2 in 2013.

Earlier, Canalys report said Samsung has 31.91 percent smartphone share in India in 2013, Micromax 21.13 percent, Karbonn 11.02 percent, Sony 6.35 percent, Nokia 4.23 percent and Apple 2.29 percent. Smartphone vendors such as LG, BlackBerry, HTC, Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo do not find a place in the top 6 list. India smartphone shipments reached 11,350,530 units in 2013, according to Canalys.

Overall phone market share

In overall phone category, Nokia retained its leadership position with 18.9 percent share in 2013 against 21.8 percent in 2012, CMR said.

Samsung market share in overall phone category was almost stable at 13.8 percent in 2012 against 13.7 percent in 2012.

Micromax increased market share in overall phone category to 10.3 percent from 6.6 percent, CMR said.

In Q4 2013, Nokia dropped market share to 16.6 percent from 18.9 percent in Q4 2012.

Samsung increased phone market share to 15.6 percent from 12 percent.

Micromax increased phone market share to 11.6 percent from 10.8 percent.

CMR’s India Monthly Mobile Handsets Market Review, CY 2013 said India recorded 247.2 million mobile handset shipments for January-December 2013. During the same period, 41.1 million smartphones were shipped in the country. 65.8 percent of the total smartphones shipped in the country were 3G smartphones during CY 2013.
