China smartphone shipments grew 6.5 percent year over year to 69.3 million units in 1Q24, said IDC. It marks the second consecutive quarter of growth.
Huawei has also made a strong comeback and achieved a tie with Honor, though supply constraints will still be a pain point. Huawei has 17 percent share in China smartphone market.
OPPO is in the third position with 15.7 percent share in the China smartphone market.
Apple’s price promotions in the quarter were unable to mitigate the impact of the intense competition from Android players. Apple, which was the #1 brand in Q1 2023, has 15.6 percent share in the China smartphone market.
Vivo has 14.6 percent share in the China smartphone market.
“The close race among the top-tier players implies that Chinese consumers are more likely to change from one brand to another,” said Will Wong, senior research manager for Client Devices at IDC Asia/Pacific. “Thus, there’s an increased need for action from the vendors to keep innovating to ensure strong customer stickiness.”
