Apple has launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, strengthening its premium smartphone portfolio with a 48MP variable-aperture camera, 2nm A20 Pro processor, Siri AI, longer battery life and improved thermal management.
Pricing starts at $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for iPhone 18 Pro Max in the United States. Both smartphones are available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage and come in black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy finish.
During the launch of Apple iPhone 18 Pro, Apple said pre-orders begin on September 12, while retail availability starts September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions, including the U.S., UK, India, China, Japan, Germany, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Singapore and the UAE.
iPhone 18 Pro Price and Upgrade Offers
Apple is positioning the iPhone 18 Pro series firmly in the premium smartphone segment.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, or $49.95 per month for 24 months, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, or $54.12 per month.
Apple Trade In offers customers $175 to $885 in credit when exchanging an iPhone 13 or newer. Selected U.S. carrier promotions can provide up to $1,200 in credits for customers trading in an iPhone 14 or later.
Apple Upgrade, its U.S. leasing program provided by Klarna, offers 12- and 24-month terms, with payments for the iPhone 18 Pro starting at $34.99 per month for 24 months.
48MP Variable-Aperture Camera Leads iPhone 18 Pro Upgrades
One of the biggest hardware changes is Apple’s new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture.
For the first time on an iPhone, users can control aperture to adjust depth of field and the amount of light reaching the sensor. The camera uses six laser-cut blades to move between different apertures.
Professional users can manually select from four aperture settings inside the Camera app. Apple has also opened an API enabling developers to provide additional aperture controls through third-party applications.
The new sensor and computational imaging pipeline are designed to improve low-light photography, image detail and group photos.
Apple has also introduced customizable Pro controls, allowing photographers to access aperture, shutter speed and white balance settings and use a histogram for checking exposure.
For video creators, Cinematic effects can be applied after recording to footage captured at up to 60 frames per second, while Time-lapse can now record in 4K with Dolby Vision HDR.
Apple Reference Image Targets AI-Era Photo Authenticity
Another notable camera feature is Apple Reference Image, which is designed to help photographers and viewers verify whether an image has been modified.
In Reference mode, the iPhone 18 Pro’s sensor captures signed data that is processed through Private Cloud Compute into an unalterable reference image. Users can compare this digital reference with the final photograph to identify potential edits.
Apple is also adding image metadata features and plans to support SynthID later in 2026 to help identify AI-generated or AI-edited images.
The feature could be particularly relevant to photojournalists, professional photographers and media organizations as AI-generated imagery becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from conventional photography.
2nm A20 Pro Brings 40% Faster Graphics
Performance is another major focus.
The A20 Pro is manufactured using 2-nanometer process technology and provides 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro.
Its architecture combines a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says GPU performance is up to 40 percent faster than A19 Pro.
The Neural Engine provides 32 cores in total, delivering twice the AI processing power of A19 Pro. The additional computing capability supports on-device generative AI, computational photography and demanding gaming workloads.
Wireless connectivity is handled by Apple’s N1 chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.
The new C2 cellular modem offers faster upload performance than C1X while consuming 15 percent less energy. It also adds mmWave support in the U.S.
Vapor Chamber Boosts Sustained Performance by Up to 40%
Apple has redesigned the thermal architecture to support the more powerful A20 Pro.
The next-generation vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the thermal system used in iPhone 17 Pro.
Apple says the combination of its new chip packaging and vapor chamber enables up to 40 percent higher sustained performance compared with the previous generation.
This could be particularly important for gaming, video processing and AI workloads where smartphones must maintain high performance for longer periods without excessive heat.
iPhone 18 Pro Max Offers Up to 45 Hours of Video Playback
Battery life is another major differentiator between the two Pro models.
The eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro provides up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours.
Apple says eSIM-only models gain additional battery capacity because the physical SIM tray has been removed, providing two extra hours of video playback.
The iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50 percent charge in around 15 minutes using wired charging. MagSafe wireless charging can reach 50 percent in approximately 30 minutes.
For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, just five minutes of wired charging can provide around seven hours of video playback.
Siri AI Turns iPhone into a Personal AI Hub
The iPhone 18 Pro series ships with iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence, with the new Siri AI rolling out initially in beta.
Siri AI can use personal context from messages, emails and photos, understand information displayed on the screen and take related actions.
Apple has also integrated Siri into the Camera app so users can ask questions about objects and scenes in front of them.
AI-powered photo tools include Spatial Reframing, Extend and upgraded Clean Up, while Image Playground adds photorealistic image generation.
Safari’s new Notify Me feature can monitor webpages for changes such as product restocks and price reductions.
Apple says sensitive AI processing will use a combination of on-device computing and Private Cloud Compute.
Smaller Dynamic Island and New Accessories
Apple has also redesigned Dynamic Island, making it smaller while increasing the amount of information it can display. The new implementation can show three Live Activities simultaneously. Accessories include a $49 Clear Case, $49 Silicone Case, $59 TechWoven Case, $59 FineWoven Wallet, $29 Wrist Strap and $59 Crossbody Strap.
