Micron Technology, a leading semiconductor company, has revealed more details about its assembly and test facility in Gujarat, India.
The phased construction of the assembly and test facility is scheduled to commence in 2023. The first phase, which encompasses 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, is expected to become operational in late 2024. Micron will gradually increase capacity in accordance with global demand trends. The second phase, similar in scale to the first, is planned to commence in the latter half of the decade.
Micron’s investment in the project will amount to approximately $825 million across both phases, resulting in the creation of up to 5,000 direct jobs at Micron and 15,000 community jobs in the coming years.
Micron will receive fiscal support of 50 percent of the total project cost from the central government, leveraging the Indian government’s Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme.
Micron will also receive incentives amounting to 20 percent of the project cost from the state of Gujarat. The combined investment from Micron and the two government entities will total up to $2.75 billion. This government support will aid in funding the project and facilitating access to crucial semiconductor infrastructure and resources to drive innovation and enhance local talent development.
Micron’s President and CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, expressed enthusiasm for India’s initiatives to develop the local semiconductor ecosystem and extended gratitude to the Indian government and all involved officials for making this investment possible. The new assembly and test facility in India will allow Micron to expand its global manufacturing footprint and better serve customers in India and worldwide.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and IT, stated that Micron’s investment in setting up assembly and test manufacturing in India would bring about a fundamental transformation in the country’s semiconductor landscape and generate tens of thousands of high-tech and construction jobs. This investment serves as a vital component of India’s flourishing semiconductor ecosystem.
Micron selected Gujarat as the location for its facility due to its robust manufacturing infrastructure, favorable business environment, and a well-established talent pool within the SANAND Industrial Park (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation – GIDC).
