Lam Research Plans ₹10,000 Crore India Investment for Silicon Manufacturing and Advanced Chip R&D

The proposed manufacturing facility will support a vertically integrated silicon manufacturing process, covering silicon ingot production and processing for advanced semiconductor technologies and leading-edge chip nodes.

The project could create opportunities for Indian companies supplying specialized materials, precision components, gases, chemicals, metrology and semiconductor manufacturing services.

Lam Research Expands Semiconductor Manufacturing in India

Lam Research has operated in India for more than 25 years, building engineering, R&D, supply-chain and workforce-development capabilities.

The ₹10,000 crore investment will take its India operations further into semiconductor manufacturing while expanding the country’s role within Lam’s global technology and supply-chain network.

The company intends to make the investment over the next several years.

The expansion comes as the global semiconductor industry continues to increase investment in advanced manufacturing capacity to address demand from AI, cloud computing, telecom networks, smartphones and high-performance computing.

Lam said the manufacturing expansion is designed to support customers worldwide as semiconductor device complexity increases, particularly with the rapid development of AI chips and advanced computing systems.

The new facility is significant because it will support silicon component manufacturing rather than functioning solely as an engineering or software development operation. This could help India broaden its semiconductor ecosystem beyond chip design and assembly into sophisticated manufacturing activities supporting global semiconductor equipment production.

Advanced Semiconductor R&D Operations to Grow

Lam Research also plans to expand its advanced R&D operations in India.

Its existing India Center for Engineering supports the company’s global semiconductor customers across areas including design, testing, validation and next-generation technology development.

Expanding these capabilities could strengthen India’s position as an engineering and R&D base for semiconductor manufacturing equipment — an increasingly important part of the chip supply chain as foundries migrate toward more advanced process technologies.

The investment also comes at a time when AI infrastructure investment is driving demand for more powerful processors, accelerators, memory and networking technologies. Lam Targets Training of Up to 60,000 Students

Workforce development will form another major component of Lam Research’s India expansion.

The company is working with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to expand access to semiconductor manufacturing education.

The initiative has a goal of training up to 60,000 students over the next several years using Lam’s Semiverse Solutions virtual learning platform.

Lam Research has also introduced its Skill Development Program, designed to provide aspiring semiconductor workers with industry-relevant skills and create pathways into advanced manufacturing careers.

Developing this talent base will be important as India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem expands and creates demand for engineers and technicians across fabs, semiconductor equipment, chip design, testing, materials and precision manufacturing.
