At this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has taken center stage, showcasing its pivotal role in the telecommunications sector with a suite of innovations aimed at shaping the future of 5G and beyond.
The telecom business is rapidly evolving, with a shift towards open and virtualized networks gaining momentum among communication service providers (CSPs). These networks offer unparalleled flexibility and efficiency, allowing for tailored solutions to meet diverse requirements. Recognizing this trend, AMD is at the forefront of delivering solutions that support open and virtualized networks, including vRAN and OpenRAN-based systems.
One of the highlights of AMD’s presence at MWC is its partnership with telecom network maker Samsung in the development of virtualized Radio Access Network (RAN) solutions powered by AMD EPYC processors. This collaboration was recently showcased as Samsung and Vodafone conducted a call leveraging AMD EPYC CPUs.
Furthermore, AMD is spearheading the expansion of OpenRAN adoption through collaborations with innovators like Parallel Wireless, AMD said in a blog post shared ahead of MWC 2024.
Parallel Wireless has announced that its GreenRAN software platform is now fully CPU agnostic, with AMD EPYC 8004 Series processors driving its OpenRAN solutions. This partnership showcases the combined capabilities of Parallel Wireless’ platform with AMD’s performance-per-watt leadership, paving the way for enhanced telco solutions.
By powering Ericsson’s Cloud Native Infrastructure Solution (CNIS), AMD EPYC CPUs have demonstrated up to 49 percent less energy consumption, according to Ericsson, showcasing the efficiency gains made possible through collaboration.
Moreover, AMD’s collaboration with Napatech and A5G has yielded a highly performant and energy-efficient edge computing platform for 5G networks. This platform, powered by AMD EPYC 8004 Series CPUs, delivers impressive throughput while maintaining exceptional energy efficiency, meeting the demands of modern telco edge deployments.
Dell Technologies has also joined forces with AMD, introducing support for AMD EPYC CPUs in its PowerEdge R7615, designed for demanding telco environments. With NEBS Level 3 Certification, the PowerEdge R7615 offers a dense telco cloud core solution, further solidifying AMD’s position as a leader in telco infrastructure.
As AMD marks its second year anniversary since the Xilinx acquisition, the synergy between the two entities continues to drive innovation in telco and networking. From processors for 5G networking to telco accelerators and adaptive computing SoCs, AMD is expanding its product portfolio to meet the evolving needs of the telecommunications industry.
At MWC 2024, AMD is showcasing a range of demonstrations at Hall 2, Stand 2M61, including 5G Advanced & 6G AI integration, Adaptive 5G vRAN solutions, and the deployment of GreenRAN 5G on EPYC 8004 Series Processors. These demonstrations underscore AMD’s commitment to driving the future of telecommunications through innovation and collaboration.
