Minnesota Leads Multistate Push to Hold Telecoms Accountable in Fight Against Illegal Robocalls
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and 50 other state attorneys general sent warning letters to 37 telecom companies for not following Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules designed to stop illegal robocalls. These rules require telecom providers to register in the Robocall Mitigation Database, submit plans to reduce robocalls, and respond to government requests to trace call origins. The letters warn of legal action if companies do not comply. Additionally, 99 downstream providers that accept call traffic from these companies were warned not to work with entities involved in fraudulent robocalls. The telecom industry uses the STIR/SHAKEN protocol to authenticate calls and reduce spoofing. Providers must register in the Robocall Mitigation Database to show efforts against illegal robocalls. Some companies have systems to block or label suspected robocalls
