AI Powers Next Wave of Telecom: VCTI Releases Open-Source Fiber Encoder Model

VCTI has launched VCTI-RoBERTa-Fiber, an open-source AI encoder model designed for optical communications. The model, trained on datasets from the fiber optics sector, is available on Hugging Face for developers, researchers, and equipment manufacturers. VCTI-RoBERTa-Fiber applies encoder and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) methods to build tools such as chatbots, semantic search engines, and systems for network fault resolution. It supports applications including network management, predictive maintenance, and automated support for optical networks.

5G in Space: ST Engineering iDirect Proves Satellite-Terrestrial Network Integration

ST Engineering iDirect completed a proof of concept showing the integration of its satellite ground infrastructure with the 5G Core network through an Interworking Gateway Function. The demonstration enabled a non-3GPP satellite network to connect with the 5G ecosystem while appearing 3GPP-compliant. The proof of concept confirmed that satellite operators can use 5G Core functions and maintain existing satellite waveforms, such as DVB-S2X and Mx-DMA MRC, without requiring infrastructure modifications. It also validated inter-provider roaming, enabling operators to extend coverage and create new service opportunities. Source: PR Newswire

NGN Expands Optical Network with Ribbon Partnership

North Georgia Network Cooperative (NGN), a member of the Fiber Network Alliance, has partnered with Ribbon to upgrade its optical transport infrastructure in North Georgia. NGN will deploy Ribbon’s Apollo 800G platform to enhance network scalability and support higher bandwidth services. The platform enables 100G, 400G, and 800G connectivity across a unified system. The upgrade addresses NGN’s need to deliver high-capacity connections to healthcare institutions, educational networks, businesses, and households in regions with limited infrastructure. Ribbon will provide implementation services and 24/7 US-based support to ensure reliable operations.

Paratus Disrupts Namibia with First Private 4G Mobile Network

Paratus Group has launched Namibia’s first private mobile network, introducing 4G LTE services in a market previously served only by state-owned operators MTC and Telecom Namibia. The company invested over 1.42 billion Namibian dollars (about $81 million) to build the network, which supports services including Voice over LTE, Wi-Fi calling, and digital activation through its own platforms. Paratus operates in 15 African countries, offering connectivity through fiber, satellite, and subsea cables. The Namibia launch expands its presence and provides an alternative to state-owned services, Reuters reports.
