Chinese Telecom Equipment Stocks Slide on Proposed US Restrictions
Chinese telecom equipment stocks fell sharply on September 28 after US lawmakers proposed measures that could expand restrictions on communications technology from countries designated as foreign adversaries. Hengtong Optic-Electric and Fiberhome Telecommunication Technologies each fell 10 percent, while Accelink Technologies declined 9.9 percent. T&S Communications dropped 8.5 percent, Ruijie Networks fell 8.5 percent, CIG Shanghai declined 7.2 percent and ZTE lost 3.5 percent. The proposed Communications and Technology Transparency Act would broaden the types of technology that could be added to the US Federal Communications Commission’s Covered List and streamline the process for restricting such products. The market reaction highlights continuing concerns among investors over potential US technology and equipment restrictions.

Russian Attack Disrupts Ukraine’s Omega Telecom Kyiv Hub
Ukraine’s backbone operator Omega Telecom reportedly lost its main Kyiv network hub following a Russian attack, affecting a key part of its telecommunications infrastructure. The incident highlights the continuing vulnerability of critical communications networks in Ukraine, where operators have faced repeated risks to infrastructure from military attacks. Backbone facilities and network hubs are particularly important because they aggregate and distribute traffic across multiple connections and can affect service continuity beyond a single site. The disruption involving Omega Telecom adds to the broader pressure on Ukrainian telecom operators to maintain connectivity while protecting infrastructure and restoring damaged facilities. The company’s network role makes the loss of a major Kyiv hub significant for backbone connectivity and the resilience of telecommunications services during ongoing hostilities.
