Airtel Hit with DoT Fine Over Subscriber Verification Breach
Bharti Airtel has been issued a penalty notice of about ₹1 lakh by the Department of Telecommunications for alleged lapses in subscriber verification procedures. The discrepancy was detected during a routine audit of Customer Application Forms (CAF), which ensures compliance with KYC and telecom licensing norms. Such audits are conducted to verify that operators follow proper customer identification and onboarding processes. Airtel disclosed the development through a regulatory filing, stating that the penalty has minimal financial impact and does not affect its business operations or service delivery.
Green Power Surge: IFC Injects $45 mn to Solarize Africa’s Telecom Towers
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has invested $45 million in IPT PowerTech to expand clean energy solutions for telecom infrastructure across Ethiopia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. The funding will support the modernization and maintenance of 2,235 telecom tower sites, with over 90 percent located in off-grid or weak-grid areas, focusing on replacing diesel generators with solar power and battery storage. This shift is expected to improve network reliability while significantly reducing emissions and operational costs, with telecom operators potentially cutting energy expenses by up to 52percent in certain regions, making operations more efficient and sustainable.
Korea’s Telecom Equipment Goes Global: Exports Set to Hit 2 Trillion Won
South Korea’s telecommunications equipment sector is rapidly expanding abroad, driven by rising global demand for AI infrastructure and high-speed networking solutions. According to recent export data, telecom equipment exports reached about $952 million (approx 1.43 trillion won) last year, and industry sources now project they could exceed 2 trillion won ($1.4 billion) soon. Key growth is expected in optical communications, critical technology for overcoming data bottlenecks at AI data centres. At the recent OFC 2026 expo in Los Angeles, several Korean companies showcased ultra-high-speed optical transceivers and modules tailored for large scale AI networks.
