India’s Telecom Exports Jump 72 Percent as 5G and Satcom Drive Growth

India’s telecom exports have surged by 72 percent over the past five years, rising from ₹10,000 crore in 2020-21 to more than ₹18,406 crore in 2024-25. The growth reflects increasing self-reliance, domestic manufacturing strength, and rising global demand for Indian telecom equipment and solutions.

The government continues to expand 5G coverage, now reaching nearly all districts, with a target of 100 crore 5G subscribers by 2030. A new satellite communications policy, including licences for Starlink, OneWeb, and Reliance, aims to extend connectivity to hard-to-reach areas. Regulatory reforms on spectrum charges and security compliance are expected to accelerate commercial launches and foster innovation nationwide.

TRAI Mandates ‘1600’ Calling Series for Insurers to Curb Fraud

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has directed all IRDAI-regulated entities to migrate service and transactional calls to the ‘1600’ numbering series by February 15, 2026. The move is designed to reduce spam and fraudulent calls while helping customers easily identify legitimate communications from insurers.

By centralizing and standardizing the calling series, TRAI aims to enhance consumer trust, improve service engagement, and strengthen overall telecom security in customer interactions.

India Tightens Satcom Security Framework Ahead of Commercial Launches

India’s telecom ministry has mandated stringent security requirements for satellite communications providers, including local hosting of international gateways and compliance with lawful interception norms. The framework is intended to safeguard national security while enabling next-generation satellite broadband services from global and domestic players.

Administrative spectrum allocation and upcoming pricing norms from TRAI are expected to provide clarity for investors. The measures pave the way for expanded broadband access in remote and underserved regions, fostering competition and bridging long-standing digital divides.
