Telstra Outage Investigation Points to Network Timing System Failure
Telstra’s external investigation has confirmed that a technical event involving its network timing system caused the Australian operator’s major mobile outage in July. The review found that incorrect date information spread through parts of the mobile network after planned maintenance, triggering the disruption. The finding supports Telstra CEO Vicki Brady’s initial explanation provided during a Senate inquiry. The investigation adds to scrutiny of Australia’s telecom sector following other significant network outages. Telstra said the review will inform corrective measures aimed at strengthening network reliability and operational controls. The incident highlights the importance of accurate network timing systems and robust maintenance processes as telecom operators manage increasingly complex mobile infrastructure and services.
Vodafone Idea and BSNL Plan Wider Network Sharing Across India
Vodafone Idea and state-owned BSNL are reportedly preparing to expand their network-sharing arrangement beyond the existing Delhi and Mumbai circles. The proposed agreement could include both intra-circle and inter-circle roaming, allowing subscribers to access the other operator’s network across additional service areas. The companies are also expected to explore sharing telecom towers and optical-fibre infrastructure for 4G and 5G services. The arrangement could help BSNL broaden coverage without independently building the full network, particularly in areas where additional infrastructure is needed, while giving Vodafone Idea an opportunity to generate revenue from BSNL subscribers using its network. BSNL had already leased around 1,441 towers to Vodafone Idea as of April 2026.
