Today’s telecom news includes announcements on Mobile Device Standards in Kenya, TRAI, SK Telecom, Ericsson, among others.
Kenya Introduces New Mobile Device Standards to Protect Consumers
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has introduced new technical standards for mobile devices, effective 2026, to ensure safety, quality, and performance. All phones sold and used in Kenya must now pass type approval checks for electromagnetic compatibility and other technical criteria. The regulations target vendors, manufacturers, and assemblers, aiming to eliminate low-quality and unsafe devices from the market. This move strengthens consumer protection and aligns Kenya’s mobile market with international safety standards.
SK Telecom & Ericsson Forge Game-Changing Path from 5G to 6G
SK Telecom and Ericsson have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance mobile network technologies from current 5G systems to future 6G innovations. Under the agreement, the partners will jointly explore and validate cutting‑edge areas such as AI‑powered Radio Access Networks (AI‑RAN) to boost network performance, security, and energy efficiency, alongside enhancements in 5G services. They also intend to research open and autonomous network architectures and collaborate on 6G standardisation including spectrum strategy, extreme MIMO evolution, energy efficiency, and Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC). This framework positions both companies at the forefront of next‑generation connectivity research.
