Ericsson, Nokia, and Fraunhofer HHI have joined forces to advance the next-generation video coding standard for the 6G era. Combining Ericsson’s network leadership, Nokia’s codec development expertise, and Fraunhofer’s research strength, the partnership has developed a proof-of-concept codec offering much higher compression efficiency than H.264, H.265, and H.266 while improving energy efficiency and scalability. Their submission has received positive evaluation from ITU-T and ISO/IEC MPEG, marking progress toward defining the video technology foundation for the 6G era.
