Uzbekistan plans to raise $300 million by selling a 100 percent stake in its mobile operator Mobiuz. The government set a bid deadline of August 1, 2025, and appointed Rothschild & Co and KPMG to manage the sale. The telecom industry in Uzbekistan is adopting new technologies to improve network capacity and coverage. Operators are deploying Massive MIMO to enhance 4G and 5G networks. Ucell and Perfectum have started rolling out standalone 5G core networks. Telecom providers are expanding into digital services including fintech, streaming, cloud, and big data platforms. Additionally, 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) is used to provide high-speed internet in rural and remote areas, Bloomberg reports.

Indian Telecom Makers Challenge Benefits to Foreign Firms Amid Local Manufacturing Push

Indian telecom equipment makers have raised concerns about benefits given to foreign companies like Ericsson and Cisco, which are expanding local operations to access India’s telecom market. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is reviewing these concerns as it balances attracting global manufacturers and supporting domestic firms. Foreign companies assembling equipment in India may qualify as Class-II suppliers under the 2017 Make in India policy, allowing them to bid for government projects with partial local production. Indian companies seek equal treatment. Foreign firms are also lobbying for duty exemptions and relaxed rules for importing components mostly sourced from China. Domestic firms argue these concessions could weaken the goal of promoting local manufacturing.

Costa Rica Launches 5G Standalone Network with Ericsson and Liberty Latin America

Ericsson and Liberty Latin America launched Costa Rica’s first 5G Standalone (SA) network under a six-year contract. The network uses Ericsson’s 5G Core and Radio Access Network (RAN) technologies and covers over 1,400 sites nationwide. It aims to serve 3.7 million subscribers with mobile broadband and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services. The 5G SA network operates independently from 4G infrastructure, allowing better scalability and performance compared to Non-Standalone (NSA) networks. It enables features like network slicing, edge computing, and low latency, supporting new applications and services. The deployment expands network coverage across the country, including underserved areas. The upgraded infrastructure supports Internet of Things (IoT) devices and helps development in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Huawei Reclaims Top Spot in China’s Smartphone Market Through Tech Innovation

Huawei has returned to the top position in China’s smartphone market for the first time in over four years, according to IDC data for Q2 2025. Huawei shipped 12.5 million units, holding an 18.1 percent market share, surpassing Vivo and Oppo despite a 3.4 percent year-on-year decline in shipments. This change is linked to Huawei’s focus on developing its own chips and operating system, HarmonyOS, which reduces reliance on external technology. Huawei has also advanced foldable smartphone technology, releasing models with new designs and features.

New SMS Labels by Indian Telecoms Help Users Spot Spam Instantly

Telecom operators in India have introduced a new SMS classification system using single-letter prefixes in the SMS header to help users identify message types. The prefixes are: P for promotional messages, S for service-related updates, T for transactional messages like bank alerts, and G for government communications. This system is implemented by major providers including Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. The aim is to improve transparency and reduce spam by allowing users to quickly recognize the nature of incoming messages. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has called for a unified regulation and consent framework that includes OTT apps to provide better consumer protection.
