BT–Verizon Deal Signals End of Global Telecom Expansion Era
A Reuters Breakingviews analysis says BT’s agreement involving Verizon reflects a broader shift in the telecommunications industry away from costly global expansion toward more focused, domestic operations. Rather than pursuing worldwide network ambitions, major telecom operators are increasingly prioritizing profitable core markets, infrastructure efficiency, and enterprise services. The commentary argues that the deal effectively closes a chapter on decades of international telecom consolidation, with companies now emphasizing disciplined capital allocation over global reach. As operators adapt to slower industry growth and rising investment demands, strategic partnerships and selective asset transactions are becoming preferred approaches to strengthening competitiveness and improving long-term financial performance.
Asia Emerges as Global Testbed for Direct-to-Cell Satellite Connectivity
Asia is rapidly becoming the leading region for direct-to-cell satellite technology, with telecom operators accelerating deployments to extend mobile coverage beyond traditional networks. Japan’s NTT Docomo plans to launch direct-to-cell services in early fiscal 2026, while Rakuten targets a late-2026 rollout with AST SpaceMobile. China has also advanced the market through successful satellite voice call trials using standard smartphones, intensifying competition in satellite-enabled connectivity. The technology promises seamless communication in remote and disaster-prone areas without requiring specialized devices. While monetization remains uncertain due to premium pricing and limited capabilities, operators increasingly view satellite connectivity as a value-added service that strengthens customer retention and premium mobile offerings.
Virgin Media O2 Activates Permanent 5G Network at Silverstone Ahead of British Grand Prix
Virgin Media O2 has switched on a permanent high-capacity 5G network at Silverstone ahead of the 2026 British Grand Prix, significantly improving connectivity for more than 500,000 expected spectators. Developed with Boldyn Networks, the distributed antenna system covers the circuit’s 570-acre site, replacing temporary event infrastructure with a permanent solution that delivers faster speeds, greater capacity and more reliable mobile services. O2 customers will be the first to benefit from the upgraded network, enabling seamless streaming, content sharing and access to race information throughout the venue. The deployment forms part of Virgin Media O2’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan to strengthen network performance in high-demand locations across the UK.
