STMicroelectronics powers Nike+ FuelBand

Telecom Lead India: STMicroelectronics, a provider of
semiconductors and MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems), has announced that
it is providing key products that are being adopted for use in health- and
fitness-monitoring products such as the Nike+ FuelBand, a wristband fitness
device.

The company said that its 3-axis accelerometer has
enabled this FuelBand to track user activity, such as running, walking,
dancing, and dozens of everyday actions.

The 3-axis accelerometer brings complex signal-processing
capabilities that let the device differentiate between simple gestures and
active motion.

The device features 120 LEDs comprising the display and a
Fuel” indicator that racks up points as the wearer exercises.

The FuelBand is powered by ST’s ultra-low power STM32L
microcontroller. The company claims that its technology provides the 32-bit
performance and processing capacity.

Furthermore, the STM32 architecture delivers real-time
responsiveness, power efficiency, and highly integrated peripherals and memory
required for even the most demanding embedded applications.

The company said that the wristband relies on ST’s
low-power technology, which makes it capable of operating for up to four fully
active days without recharging.

Benedetto Vigna, executive vice president, general
manager of the Analog, MEMS & Sensors Group at STMicroelectronics said that
the Nike+ FuelBand is a great example of how companies in vastly different
industries are collaborating to design new products which have the potential to
profoundly affect the wellbeing of people all over the world.
