Cisco leads in content security appliance in Q2 2011

Cisco is leading in the
content security appliance segment in the second quarter of 2011, ahead of Blue Coat, and moved
into second place after McAfee
in the overall content security market, according to Infonetics Research.

Cisco maintains its lead in
the overall network security appliance and software market with close to a
third of the revenue, and Check
Point
moves into 2nd ahead of Juniper on the
strength of its revenue increase in 2Q11 (Check Point network security revenue
up 10.5 percent).

While Cisco will have a hard time beating their
impressive 2Q11 performance in this space next quarter, we believe Federal
spending despite soft expectations will help most content security gateway
vendors increase revenue in 3Q11,” said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for
security at Infonetics Research.

In the network security appliance and software market,
all of the major network security vendors are poised for growth in 3Q11, with
most growing in the 5 percent to 10 percent range for the quarter.

Global content security gateway appliance and software
sales grew 8 percent in 2Q11 over 1Q11 to $766 million, a typical second
quarter rebound after a seasonally soft first quarter.

Year-over-year (2Q10 to 2Q11), the content security
gateway market is up 18 percent. The worldwide content security market hit $2.7
billion in 2010, up 19 percent over 2009.

Infonetics forecasts the content security appliance and
software market will grow to $3.9 billion by 2015.

The worldwide network security appliance and software
market grew 4 percent in 2Q11 to $1.37 billion.

The second half of 2011 shows no sign of slowdown from a
threat publicity perspective; Anonymous continues to find new targets (BART and
Facebook being the most notable), and the University of Wisconsin and Yale both
disclosed large potential breaches.

Infonetics expects the global network security appliance
and software market to grow 4 percent in 2011.
