Airtel, Aircel, Vodafone, Idea, Videocon and Uninor to step up Spectrum pressure

Telecom Lead India: After a long time, the Indian mobile
industry will see the CEOs of Airtel, Aircel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and
Videocon Telecommunications, assembling in one platform.

Their main demand is to cut down the reserve price of
spectrum suggested by the telecom regulator TRAI.

Sanjay Kapoor, CEO (India and South Asia), Airtel;
Himanshu Kapania, managing director, Idea Cellular; Sandip Das, director,
Aircel; Marten Pieters, CEO and managing director, Vodafone; Arvind Bali, CEO
and director, Videocon and Rajiv Bawa, chief representative officer, Telenor
India, will attend a press meet on May 3 in Delhi. The event is organized by
COAI.

TRAI’s spectrum auction recommendations are a big blow to
the consumer and industry, according to Rajan S. Mathews, director general of
COAI.

Uninor, Videocon Airtel, Idea, Vodafone knock telecom ministry
door

Airtel, Idea, Vodafone, Uninor and Videocon have
approached Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal expressing their concerns over TRAI’s
spectrum recommendations.

CEOs of these five telecom companies said the reserve
price proposed by the telecom regulator should be reduced by at least 80
percent.

If the auction is held at the proposed price then mobile
tariffs will go up by 25-30 percent, they said in a letter to India’s telecom
minister.

TRAI spectrum policy will affect mobile broadband growth in
India: GSMA

Recently, GSMA said that TRAI’s spectrum auction
recommendations will escalate mobile spectrum cost and affect mobile broadband
growth in Indian telecom market.
