NexChip has dominated the large-area display and LCD driver IC segments, while Samsung Foundry secured its lead in the AMOLED DDIC market, underscoring the competitive dynamics in the industry, according to Omdia’s latest Display Driver IC Market Tracker.

The latest Omdia  report reveals that Chinese foundries captured 55 percent of the large-area DDIC market share in the second quarter of 2024, surpassing this threshold for the first time. They maintained a 49 percent share in the third quarter, with NexChip claiming a dominant 42 percent of the large-area DDIC segment.

Taiwanese foundries, including UMC, Vanguard, and PSMC, followed closely, holding a combined market share of 38 percent. The growing influence of Chinese foundries is reshaping the competitive landscape in this segment.

In the small and medium-sized display market, NexChip maintained its leadership in the LCD driver IC segment for the third quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, Samsung Foundry strengthened its position in the AMOLED driver IC segment, capturing 31 percent of the market, driven by its collaboration with Samsung LSI. TSMC also increased its share to 17 percent, supported by LX Semicon’s production for the iPhone 16 series. UMC secured 26 percent of the market, with Novatek as its largest customer.

Samsung Foundry and UMC are supplying DDICs to several smartphone brands, including iPhone. TSMC primarily serves the iPhone market. Other players like SMIC and GlobalFoundries also maintained strong positions in the AMOLED sector.

Queenie Jiang, Senior Analyst for Omdia’s Display Driver IC research, said that key players are expected to drive further innovation and partnerships as the industry continues to expand.
