iPhone Users Emerge as Top-Spending Consumers of Microdrama Apps: Omdia

iPhone users are emerging as the most commercially valuable consumers of microdrama apps, spending around 40 percent more than Android users, according to new Omdia research.

Microdrama market size

The findings challenge the perception that short-form microdramas primarily attract niche or lower-income viewers. Instead, audiences across several major markets include iPhone owners who demonstrate a stronger willingness to purchase subscriptions, make one-off payments and use in-app currencies.

Omdia’s analysis of Sensor Tower data found that iPhone users spend approximately $14 per week on microdrama apps, compared with around $10 per week among Android users. The $4 difference makes iPhone audiences particularly important for microdrama producers, streaming platforms, app developers and advertisers seeking higher-value customers.

US Microdrama Consumption Is Balanced Across iPhone and Android

The United States has developed a relatively mature microdrama audience across both mobile ecosystems.

Around 9 percent of US iPhone users and 10 percent of Android users used at least one microdrama app during the previous three months. This indicates that Android users have a marginal lead in audience reach.

However, the two groups are almost identical when it comes to paying for content. About 69 percent of iPhone microdrama users and 68 percent of Android users said they spend money through subscriptions, individual purchases or virtual in-app currencies.

These figures suggest that the main US microdrama consumer is not limited to one smartphone platform. Both iPhone and Android audiences offer substantial monetization potential, although iPhone users generate higher average spending globally.

South Korean iPhone Users Show Strongest Willingness to Pay

The difference between iPhone and Android consumers becomes more pronounced outside the United States.

South Korea recorded the biggest monetization gap among the markets analyzed. Around 59 percent of iPhone users pay for microdrama content, compared with 45 percent of Android users—a difference of 14 percentage points.

The findings position South Korean iPhone owners among the most attractive target audiences for premium microdrama subscriptions, paid episodes and in-app currency packages.

Brazil also shows a significant platform divide. About 48 percent of Brazilian iPhone users pay for microdramas, compared with 39 percent of Android users, creating a 9-percentage-point gap.

In Germany, 49 percent of iPhone users pay for microdrama content, against 44 percent of Android users. Although the 5-percentage-point difference is smaller, iPhone users retain a clear monetization advantage.

Who Are the Main Consumers of Microdrama Apps?

Omdia’s data indicates that microdrama audiences are increasingly broad and commercially diverse. Android users can deliver comparable or slightly higher app reach, as demonstrated by the United States, but iPhone users tend to be the stronger revenue-generating segment.

The main high-value microdrama consumers are therefore iPhone owners—particularly those in South Korea, Brazil and Germany—who are more likely to pay and spend more each week.

This distinction is important because audience size alone does not determine the commercial success of a microdrama app. Developers must also consider payment conversion, weekly spending and regional differences between iPhone and Android consumers.

“Microdramas are rapidly becoming one of the fastest-growing segments of digital entertainment,” said Maria Rua Aguete, Head of Media & Entertainment at Omdia. She noted that identifying who pays, rather than only who watches, will be crucial to long-term commercial success.

For content owners, microdrama platforms and advertisers, the findings support differentiated strategies for each device ecosystem. iPhone audiences may be better suited to premium subscriptions and higher-priced content packages, while Android’s wider reach can support advertising-led and freemium models.

Maria Rua Aguete will present Omdia’s latest global microdrama market research at IBC 2026 in Amsterdam and MIPCOM 2026 in Cannes later this year.
