Arris overtakes Cisco to lead cable access platform (CCAP) market: Infonetics

Arris has overtaken Cisco to lead the worldwide new CCAP (converged cable access platform) equipment revenue market in Q1 2014, said Infonetics Research.

Casa Systems increased revenue by 13 percent in the first quarter.

The combined global CMTS, CCAP, and edge QAM market slipped 6 percent to $332 million in Q1 2014 against Q4 2013.

CCAP revenue increased 177 percent sequentially in Q1 2014, while CMTS revenue dropped 76 percent, said Infonetics in its 1st quarter 2014 CMTS, CCAP, and Edge QAM Hardware and Subscribers report, which tracks cable broadband equipment and subscribers.

The report noted 229 percent sequential increase in CCAP channel shipments.

In the North American market, revenue dropped 13 percent despite CMTS and CCAP channel shipments jumping 20 percent.

“Majority of cable operator spending in the first quarter of 2014 went toward new CCAP (converged cable access platform) equipment instead of the bedrock of cable broadband, CMTS,” said Jeff Heynen, principal analyst for broadband access and pay TV at Infonetics Research.

The report said global cable operators are on a steady path of adding significant channel capacity as part of DOCSIS 3.0, IP video, business service, carrier Wi-Fi, and forthcoming DOCSIS 3.1 rollouts.
