Mundo’s Rural-First FTTH Strategy Makes Chile a Global Broadband Leader, Wins World’s Fastest ISP Recognition

Mundo Chile has transformed from a small rural internet service provider into one of the world’s fastest broadband operators by prioritizing underserved communities before expanding into major cities. The company’s unconventional Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) strategy, backed by Ookla Speedtest Intelligence and the Speedtest Awards program, helped position Chile among the world’s fastest fixed broadband markets while earning Mundo recognition as the World’s Fastest Provider.

Unlike most telecom operators that first target metropolitan markets, Mundo launched its services in the rural towns of Chile’s Concepcion region, bringing the same advanced broadband technology available in large cities to remote communities. The strategy proved highly effective in Chile’s competitive broadband market, where eight broadband providers each hold more than 3 percent market share and nationwide FTTH deployment was established before the pandemic.

Major ISPs in Chile

Chile’s fixed broadband market is led by Movistar Chile, Claro-VTR, Mundo Telecomunicaciones, Entel, and GTD, with fiber becoming the dominant access technology. Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) accounts for 84.1 percent of all fixed broadband connections in the country after growing 18.9 percent year over year, while 66.4 percent of broadband households subscribe to speeds between 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps.

Movistar Chile, owned by Telefónica, remains the country’s largest fixed broadband provider with a 27.5 percent market share and 32.6 percent of Chile’s FTTH market. The operator continues investing in nationwide fiber expansion to strengthen its leadership in high-speed broadband services.

Claro-VTR holds a 26.8 percent share of the fixed broadband market following the integration of Claro’s mobile business with VTR’s cable and broadband operations. The company continues investing in fiber upgrades and network modernization, with VTR accounting for 12.8 percent of Chile’s FTTH connections and Claro contributing 4 percent.

Mundo Telecomunicaciones has emerged as Chile’s fastest-growing fiber operator, capturing 20.9 percent of the broadband market and 24.8 percent of FTTH connections. The company has focused its investments on expanding fiber infrastructure in underserved regions before extending coverage into major urban centers, making it one of the country’s largest FTTH providers.

Entel holds a 10.2 percent share of Chile’s broadband market and continues investing in converged fixed and mobile infrastructure. The company reported CLP 457 billion in capital expenditure during 2025, representing 15.1 percent of revenue, and served approximately 702,000 fixed revenue-generating units (RGUs) across Chile and Peru at the end of the year. Earlier investment plans included approximately US$618 million for network expansion, with US$451 million allocated to Chile.

GTD Group accounts for 6.2 percent of Chile’s fixed broadband market and continues expanding its fiber network, primarily targeting residential and enterprise customers with high-speed connectivity services.

How Mundo gained competitive advantage

By first building a strong customer base in southern Chile before expanding into Santiago, Mundo gained a competitive advantage while accelerating broadband adoption across the country. The company’s localized investment resulted in one of the world’s rare examples where median fixed broadband speeds in rural areas exceed those in urban regions.

Private Investment Drives Chile’s Broadband Leadership

Chile’s rise as a broadband powerhouse is particularly significant because the country achieved it primarily through private-sector investment rather than large-scale government-funded broadband programs.

Despite geographical challenges that include the Atacama Desert, the Andes Mountains, and one of the world’s longest north-to-south territories, aggressive infrastructure investments and competitive pricing from Mundo encouraged rival operators to upgrade their own networks. This intensified competition helped Chile consistently rank among the top five fastest countries globally for fixed broadband over the past several years.

Ookla Data Supports Network Expansion and 50 Gbps Broadband Launch

Mundo partnered with Ookla to independently validate network performance while using Speedtest Intelligence to optimize network planning and expansion.

The platform enabled Mundo to identify network bottlenecks, prioritize expansion zones, benchmark performance against leading international internet providers, and accelerate deployment of advanced technologies including XGS-PON, Fiber-to-the-Room (FTTR), and Fiber-to-the-Office (FTTO).

Leveraging these network upgrades, Mundo expanded enterprise services and introduced an industry-leading 50 Gbps broadband plan, supported by Wi-Fi 7, full FTTH connectivity, and mesh networking solutions.

Valparaíso Named World’s Fastest Broadband City

The company’s investments contributed to a historic achievement for Chile. According to the June Ookla Speedtest Global Index, Valparaíso was ranked as the fastest city in the world for fixed broadband, reinforcing Chile’s position as a global connectivity leader.

Independent certification through the Speedtest Awards also enabled Mundo to demonstrate network superiority in a highly competitive domestic market while strengthening customer confidence with transparent third-party performance validation.

From its beginnings as a regional ISP serving rural communities, Mundo has evolved into a nationally recognized telecom operator with global recognition. Its rural-first investment strategy demonstrates that world-class broadband infrastructure and the world’s fastest internet speeds can be built outside major metropolitan centers while transforming an entire country’s digital competitiveness.
