Internet download speed starts improving in India: Opensignal

Smartphone customers in urban areas across India have experienced faster Internet download speeds post-lockdown, according to the latest Opensignal report.

The Opensignal report released today revealed Internet download speed during lockdown and post lockdown.

Indian smartphone users experienced significantly lower download speeds during the second phase (April 13-May 3) of the lockdown compared to pre-lockdown levels. Internet speeds returned to pre-lockdown levels in a majority of cities in the third phase (May 4-May 17), the report said.

Overall download speeds showed slightly different patterns in Tier 1 cities. Bangalore and Chennai did not see any significant decrease in download speeds, while users in Pune saw a decline of 6.9 percent-12.5 percent which was limited to Phase 1 of lockdown. Data speeds started returning to normal in the second phase (April 15-May 13) in the remaining Tier 1 cities.

The download speeds for our users in a majority of cities had returned to normal towards the end of the fourth phase of lockdown (May 18-31). Users in some of the cities started to see significantly faster download speeds.

Users in Delhi experienced improvement of 38.1 percent in download speed, followed by users in Mumbai (33.5 percent), Hyderabad (33.1 percent), Gaziabad (32.4 percent) and Chennai (30.4 percent) during the week ending July 12.

Users experienced significantly lower data download speeds in Dhanbad, Kanpur, Solapur and Thiruvananthapuram throughout the period when lockdown loosened.
