GlobalData has revealed its report showing the forecast on mobile services revenue and broadband business in Myanmar over 2020-2025.
MPT
MPT earlier said its 2G, 3G and 4G network serves more than 27 million customers in all states and regions in Myanmar.
MPT’s LTE+ network is available in 316 townships across Myanmar. MPT says it operates the widest nationwide network covering over 96 percent of Myanmar’s population.
MPT is increasing the density of its network, offering new services such as affordable and reliable high-speed Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) internet service in 54 townships and upgrading over 180 Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) with equipment across states and regions.
“We are proud to be building the digital future for our customers across Myanmar as we have done so throughout the years, offering the most widespread and most reliable 3G & LTE+ networks for our customers,” said Tetsunori Nagashima, chief commercial officer of MPT-KSGM JO.
Mobile services
The mobile services revenues in Myanmar will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.5 percent from $2.1 billion in 2020 to $2.2 billion in 2025, supported by growth in mobile data segment.
Mobile data revenues in Myanmar will grow at 6 percent CAGR over 2020-2025, driven by mobile Internet subscriptions and increasing data average revenue per user (ARPU). Mobile voice and messaging revenues will decline at CAGRs of 4.4 percent and 12.3 percent, respectively.
4G will become the leading mobile technology in 2021. 4G subscriptions will grow at a CAGR of 22 percent over 2020-2025 as operators such as Telenor and Ooredoo expand their LTE networks and the availability of affordable 4G handsets increase.
The country’s telecom regulator plans to auction 5G spectrum in 2020 and commercial 5G launch is unlikely to take place before 2023 in Myanmar.
MPT will remain the mobile market leader during 2020-2025, closely followed by Telenor. GlobalData expects MPT to remain the market leader through 2025, on the back of its focus on investment in telecom infrastructure upgrade required to support future launch of 5G services.
Fixed communication services
The fixed communication services market in Myanmar will register a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7 percent from $144.7 million in 2020 to $203 million in 2025, driven by revenues from the fixed voice and broadband services.
The government’s initiatives to expand fixed infrastructure to narrow digital divide will drive the adoption of fixed services. Fixed broadband revenue is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.3 percent over 2020-2025. Fixed voice services revenues will expand at a CAGR of 3.9 percent.
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) will remain the primary technology to deliver fixed broadband services in Myanmar during 2020-2025. DSL will have 90.9 percent share of the total fixed broadband subscriptions in 2020. Fiber broadband lines will proliferate, led by investments from operators such as MPT.
MPT will dominate the fixed voice and broadband markets during 2020-2025, on the back of its foothold in the VoIP services segment and monopoly in the DSL segment. The operator has been promoting fixed-mobile convergent plans integrated with fiber broadband services with speed up to 100Mbps to drive usage among residential users.
