India’s state-run telecom services provider BSNL has tied up with DTH operator Tata Sky to offer video-on-demand services in select states.

BSNL is offering free first month broadband rental. Tata Sky will be offering video-on-demand services free for the first month to download content worth up to Rs 500.

BSNL and Tata Sky will enter into a strategic alliance and seek broadband customers for BSNL who will be utilizing video-on-demand services offered by Tata Sky.

BSNL is expected to get additional broadband customers and Tata Sky will provide its subscribers the option of video-on-demand, the companies said.

BSNL and Tata Sky will implement the deal starting with one or two states and would like to cover the entire nation within next six months.

Meanwhile, BSNL Chennai — in partnership with Quadgen Wireless — has Wi-Fi enabled various locations in the city and plans to cover more areas in the next couple of months.

BSNL is offering the Wi-Fi access called QFI as a free service for the first 15 minutes every fortnight and subscribers can purchase e-coupons seamlessly online. These coupons can be used in BSNL Wi-Fi zones in South and West India.

Depending on the number of users in a zone and the user location, subscribers can get up to 8 Mbps download speeds.

BSNL says Quadgen is a carrier Wi-Fi Overlay Service Provider to BSNL with the responsibility to build, own, operate, maintain and market the Wi-Fi network.
