Broadband providers to deploy over 120 million routers and residential gateways in 2017

Telecom Lead India: Broadband providers will deploy over 120 million routers and residential gateways (RGs) in 2017, posting CAGR of 9.5 percent from 2012.

Parks Associates’ latest report — Residential Gateway Trends: Bringing Value Home — sponsored by Jungo, says the average U.S. broadband household has approximately 4 TVs and TV-connected devices, three mobile/portable devices, and 2.5 computing devices.

Consumer adoption of connected CE will continue in 2013, with over 17 million smart TVs to be sold in North America in 2013.

Brett Sappington, director, research, Parks Associates, said: “Consumers are adding many new connected devices to the home, and they expect these devices to interact. The gateway’s hardware and software capabilities help manage the home network and contribute to increased consumer satisfaction and service stickiness. Operators can also use RGs with advanced software solutions to introduce new services quickly and thus derive new revenues.”

Multiscreen services and home automation top the list of value-added services of interest to broadband service providers. High-end gateways allow providers to deploy these services now and give the flexibility to adapt to future needs, including improved video streaming and cloud-based services.
