Cisco supplies ASR 5000 for mobile Internet network of KDDI and Turkcell

Telecom Lead Asia:
Cisco has signed up KDDI of Japan and Turkcell of Turkey for supplying Cisco ASR 5000 Series as the foundation for their mobile Internet network.

In the case of KDDI, Cisco ASR 5500 mobile multimedia core platform will be a foundation for KDDI’s 4G LTE network.

Turkcell selected the Cisco ASR 5000 Series as its GPRS Support Node (GGSN) solution.

Supported on the ASR 5000 Series, the GGSN application delivers significant throughput, call transaction rates and packet processing, along with significant memory resources.

According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update (2012 to 2017), mobile data traffic in Japan will grow 14-fold, a compound annual growth rate of 71 percent. It will reach an annual run rate of 1.8 exabytes in 2017.

Japan generates 16 percent of the world’s total mobile data traffic with only two percent of Internet-enabled devices.

Toshihiko Yumoto, vice president and general manager, Network Technical Development Division, KDDI, said: “Our recent decision to use Cisco as our mobile packet core provider will help enable us to deliver an improved level of service intelligence and performance to customers across Japan, namely our new au 3G and 4G LTE services.”

The Cisco GGSN application on the Cisco ASR 5000 Series is the window to the Internet and acts as the gateway between the mobile network infrastructure and the external Internet Protocol (IP)-based network.

Ilker Kuruoz, chief information officer, Turkcell, said: “We aim to differentiate Turkcell by strengthening network availability and capacity while providing innovative services for our customers. Working with Cisco enables Turkcell to implement new services and capabilities on the Packet Core network.”
