Egypt Orders Nationwide SIM Verification Drive Covering 19 Million Lines
Egypt has launched a nationwide verification campaign requiring mobile subscribers to confirm and update registration information, with approximately 19 million SIM cards targeted in the first phase. The country’s four mobile operators are sending messages to customers whose registration details are incomplete, requiring them to visit company branches to restore suspended service. The campaign is designed to ensure that the registered owner of each mobile line matches the person actually using it. The initiative follows regulatory concerns over SIM cards registered under individuals’ names without their knowledge or consent, which authorities say can facilitate fraud and unauthorized account creation. Egypt has about 127 million registered mobile lines, meaning the verification effort is expected to expand in subsequent stages.
Zain Jordan Advances 5G Monetization with Ericsson Cloud-Native BSS Upgrade
Zain Jordan is expanding its digital transformation partnership with Ericsson through a major modernization of its Business Support Systems, preparing its IT infrastructure for 5G-era services. The project includes cloud-native Ericsson Billing on Red Hat OpenShift, Ericsson’s Telco DataOps Platform and a catalog-driven architecture for postpaid services. The upgraded platform will provide real-time data insights, support proactive customer-experience management and enable faster launches of new digital offers. The transformation is also designed to improve operational efficiency and create new revenue opportunities from 5G services. Ericsson and Zain Jordan said the modernization will establish a more flexible and scalable digital ecosystem while laying the foundation for AI-driven autonomous networks and more personalized services for subscribers.
NXP Breaks Ground on Malaysia Chip Factory, Output to More Than Double
NXP Semiconductors has started construction of a new assembly and test factory in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, strengthening its global manufacturing network and supply-chain resilience. The expansion will add approximately 500,000 square feet of production space to NXP’s existing Malaysian operations, taking the site’s total production area to around 900,000 square feet. The facility will support the assembly and testing of NXP’s broad semiconductor portfolio. Production is expected to begin ramping during the first quarter of 2028. Once the expanded site becomes fully operational, its overall output is projected to more than double. The additional capacity will also support future production from NXP’s VSMC joint venture in Singapore and its ESMC joint venture in Dresden, Germany.
