Samsung Faces Massive Strike Threat as 48,000 Workers Clash Over Pay and AI Chip Bonuses

Samsung Electronics is facing one of the biggest labor crises in its history as nearly 48,000 unionized workers prepare for an 18-day strike over disputes related to wages, bonuses, and profit-sharing linked to the booming AI semiconductor business. The strike threat comes at a crucial time for the global memory chip market, where Samsung remains a dominant supplier for AI servers, smartphones, laptops, and data centers.

Samsung management and labor unions resumed last-minute government-mediated negotiations on Wednesday, just one day before the planned strike deadline. However, talks failed to bridge major differences over bonus structures and compensation policies.

The labor union is demanding that Samsung abolish the existing cap on bonuses, which currently limits payouts to 50 percent of annual salaries. Workers are also seeking allocation of 15 percent of Samsung’s annual operating profit into a shared employee bonus pool, reflecting frustration that staff have not sufficiently benefited from the AI-driven semiconductor boom.

Samsung has rejected the demands, calling them unacceptable and warning that permanently embedding such bonus structures into contracts could damage long-term management flexibility and raise labor costs significantly. The company reportedly proposed allocating 9 percent to 10 percent of annual operating profit toward bonuses if revenue exceeds 200 trillion won in 2026, while maintaining the current bonus cap.

The planned strike would involve around 38 percent of Samsung Electronics’ domestic workforce and could severely affect South Korea’s economy. Government officials warned the disruption could reduce the country’s projected 2 percent GDP growth by nearly 0.5 percentage points if production interruptions continue.

Samsung is the world’s largest memory chip manufacturer and contributes nearly a quarter of South Korea’s exports. Analysts fear prolonged disruptions could tighten global supply of DRAM and NAND memory chips used in AI infrastructure and consumer electronics. Industry estimates indicate the strike could disrupt around 4 percent of global DRAM supply and 3 percent of NAND output.

The labor dispute has intensified amid growing dissatisfaction among Samsung employees over widening compensation gaps with rival SK Hynix. SK Hynix workers reportedly received bonuses more than three times larger than Samsung employees last year after the company benefited heavily from AI memory chip demand tied to NVIDIA AI accelerators.

Samsung executives have reportedly warned that several semiconductor customers expressed concerns over supply stability and product quality during a strike. Some customers were even considering delaying shipments if industrial action disrupted operations.

The South Korean government is now considering emergency arbitration measures that could temporarily halt the strike for 30 days while negotiations continue. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said authorities are reviewing all options to prevent economic and supply chain damage.

A South Korean court has already partially approved Samsung’s request for an injunction requiring essential staff to continue working during any industrial action. More than 7,000 employees may still be required to remain on duty to protect semiconductor production facilities and prevent operational damage.

The current dispute marks another major chapter in Samsung’s evolving labor relations history. The company historically maintained a strict anti-union stance before publicly pledging labor reforms in recent years. The standoff now represents the most serious challenge to Samsung’s labor-management relations during the global AI semiconductor expansion cycle.
