SK Telecom and Ericsson Accelerate 6G Innovation with AI-Powered Network Collaboration

SK Telecom and Ericsson have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen collaboration on next-generation mobile technologies, with a strong focus on advancing 6G capabilities and AI-driven network evolution.

6G deal between SK Telecom and Ericsson

The agreement outlines a long-term strategic partnership that spans 5G enhancements and foundational research for 6G, positioning both companies to play a leading role in shaping the future of global connectivity.

At the core of the collaboration is the development of AI-powered Radio Access Networks, which will enable networks to autonomously learn, predict, and optimize performance. These AI-native systems are expected to significantly improve spectrum efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and enhance real-time decision-making – key pillars for future 6G infrastructure.

The partnership also emphasizes accelerating 5G innovation to unlock new enterprise use cases and revenue streams. By integrating advanced capabilities such as network automation and intelligent orchestration, the companies aim to bridge current 5G deployments with emerging 6G requirements.

A major component of the agreement is the advancement of open and autonomous network architectures. These technologies will support multi-vendor ecosystems, improve operational efficiency, and enable scalable deployment models critical for 6G networks. In parallel, both companies will strengthen end-to-end security through zero trust frameworks and continuous monitoring systems, ensuring resilience across increasingly complex network environments.

On the 6G front, SK Telecom and Ericsson will jointly explore key enabling technologies, including next-generation spectrum strategies, extreme MIMO evolution, enhanced energy efficiency, and Integrated Sensing and Communication. These innovations are expected to define 6G standards, delivering ultra-low latency, massive connectivity, and intelligent network capabilities that go beyond traditional communication.

The collaboration will also focus on global 6G standardization efforts, ensuring alignment with international frameworks while accelerating real-world validation of advanced technologies. By combining research and commercialization strategies, the companies aim to transition quickly from trials to deployment, strengthening their competitive edge in the evolving telecom landscape.

The MoU, effective until March 2031, establishes a structured framework for continuous innovation, enabling both companies to scale AI-powered network solutions while laying a robust foundation for 6G commercialization.

Marten Lerner, Head of Networks Strategy and Product Management at Ericsson, and  Yu Takki, Head of Network Technology Office at SK Telecom, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership in driving AI-native network transformation. The initiative is expected to reinforce South Korea’s position as a global leader in next-generation connectivity while accelerating the industry’s transition toward 6G-ready networks.
