South Korea 5G Market Surpasses 40 mn Subscribers as AI and Enterprise Services Drive Growth

South Korea remains one of the world’s most advanced mobile markets, with 5G becoming the dominant wireless technology. According to the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), the country had more than 40 million 5G subscribers by early 2026, representing roughly 70 percent of all mobile subscriptions, while nationwide 5G population coverage exceeded 99 percent. The rapid migration to 5G continues to support higher mobile data consumption and increased demand for premium connectivity services across both consumer and enterprise segments.

The increasing adoption of premium unlimited data plans, cloud gaming, AI-powered mobile applications, high-definition video streaming, and immersive digital services is expected to drive higher spending on mobile broadband. Telecom operators are also expanding enterprise 5G offerings, including private 5G networks, edge computing, and AI-enabled network services, creating additional revenue opportunities beyond traditional consumer connectivity.

South Korea continues to rank among the global leaders in mobile network performance. According to recent Opensignal and Ookla network performance studies, the country’s operators consistently deliver some of the world’s fastest 5G download speeds and lowest latency, supporting bandwidth-intensive applications such as AI assistants, cloud gaming, augmented reality, and ultra-high-definition video streaming. These network quality improvements are expected to accelerate data consumption and strengthen demand for premium mobile plans.

Beyond consumer adoption, operators are accelerating commercialization of 5G Standalone (SA) architecture to support network slicing, ultra-low latency services, industrial automation, autonomous transportation, smart manufacturing, and mission-critical enterprise applications. The transition to standalone 5G is expected to become a key differentiator as operators seek to monetize enterprise digital transformation initiatives.

South Korea’s digital infrastructure strategy also emphasizes artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cloud computing, and advanced communications technologies. Government support for AI-driven digital services, smart cities, robotics, and industrial automation is expected to generate additional demand for high-capacity 5G networks while encouraging continued investment in nationwide standalone infrastructure.

SK Telecom continues to strengthen its leadership through investments in artificial intelligence, AI data centers, edge computing, enterprise cloud services, and private 5G networks. Meanwhile, KT and LG Uplus are expanding AI-powered customer services, cloud connectivity, and enterprise digital transformation offerings while accelerating deployment of standalone 5G capabilities and next-generation network infrastructure.

AI and Enterprise Services Create New Revenue Opportunities

South Korea’s telecom operators are increasingly shifting their growth strategies beyond traditional connectivity toward artificial intelligence and enterprise digital services. Investments in AI-powered customer platforms, private 5G networks, cloud infrastructure, edge computing, cybersecurity, and industry-specific digital solutions are expected to create new revenue streams as consumer mobile markets mature. The convergence of AI and standalone 5G is also enabling operators to offer differentiated services for manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, logistics, and smart city applications.

Outlook

South Korea’s mobile services market is expected to remain one of the world’s most advanced through 2030, supported by continued migration to 5G, growing enterprise adoption of 5G Standalone, and rising demand for AI-enabled digital services. GlobalData forecasts mobile data service revenue will grow at a CAGR of 5 percent between 2025 and 2030, while average monthly mobile data usage will increase from 19.4 GB to 41.8 GB per subscriber. By 2030, 94 percent of mobile subscriptions are expected to use 5G technology. Combined with nationwide standalone network deployment, AI investments, enterprise digital transformation, and premium service offerings, South Korea’s operators are well positioned to generate sustainable revenue growth while maintaining the country’s global leadership in advanced mobile communications.
