Ofcom reviews spectrum fees for mobile operators

Ofcom has announced the launch of a review of the annual licence fees (ALFs) charged to mobile network operators for the use of three key mobile spectrum bands: 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz. These fees are implemented after the initial licence period obtained through auction has expired and aim to ensure efficient use of the spectrum.

This decision follows a request from BT on March 28, 2024, for a review of the ALFs for the 1800 MHz spectrum. After consideration, Ofcom found sufficient evidence to justify this review. Consequently, due to the similarities in the formula used to set ALFs, Ofcom will review the fees for all three spectrum bands.

Ofcom plans to consult on its initial findings by the end of the year and is inviting stakeholders to provide any additional evidence that may support the review process.
