Nokia lands 5G equipment deal from Ooredoo

Ooredoo and Nokia for 5GOoredoo has partnered with Nokia for rolling out 5G across the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Ooredoo and Nokia will deploy 5G network starting 2018 in Qatar. Ooredoo has already become the world’s first telecommunications company to launch 5G, launching services in Qatar – aiming for business customers. Ooredoo has already received 5G spectrum for the necessary 5G investments.

This is a big win for Nokia considering the tough competition in the 5G equipment market. Nokia earlier announced that it bagged a 5G equipment contract from NTT Docomo, a top telecom operator in Japan. Nokia is behind Ericsson in terms of 5G equipment deals.

Waleed Al-Sayed, deputy group chief executive officer, said: “This year, we are pushing forward with our network modernisation projects at a blistering pace. Ooredoo will pioneer 5G innovations to deliver superior mobile data experiences for our customers.”
Nokia 5G for OoredooOoredoo is leveraging Nokia’s 5G-ready products, such as the AirScale radio platform and 5G Adaptive Antenna System based on 3GPP Rel. 15 New Radio.

Amr K. El Leithy, head of Middle East and Africa Market, Nokia, said: “We are committed to leveraging our latest technology advancements and professional services to help Ooredoo Group in preparing its networks for providing the best-in-class services, including 5G for its customers.”
