KT showcases 5G mobile during Asian Games in Indonesia

KT, a leading telecom operator in South Korea, is showcasing its 5G wireless technology and services during Asia’s largest sporting event in Indonesia.

KT is showcasing the 5G mobile at KT’s 5G Zone in cooperation with Telkomsel, a telecom provider in Indonesia.

KT has set up the 5G Zone at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, the primary venue for the sporting event in Jakarta.

KT is preparing for the launch of the world’s first nationwide 5G network in March 2019. KT successfully showcased trial 5G services with the world’s first 5G-ready network in February 2018.

Research firm IHS Markit, releasing a 5G survey report, said extreme mobile broadband (eMBB) is the highest-rated 5G use case driver among survey respondents, followed by real-time gaming.

“5G is going live in North America by the end of 2018, and then in South Korea in 2019. Most operators in Europe, however, aren’t planning to deploy 5G until 2021 or later,” said Stephane Teral, executive research director, mobile infrastructure and carrier economics, IHS Markit.

“We hope players and people from all around the world get a taste of various 5G services at our 5G Zone, before KT’s commercial launch early next year,” said Lee Pil-Jai, head of KT’s Marketing Group.

KT’s 5G Zone in Jakarta is providing interactive experiences to sports fans. KT said its Free View technology allows users to select from real-time shots and view them from different angles in stereoscopic vision. KT’s Free View will be used for viewing badminton and basketball.

KT’s Sync View and Omni View technology will also be used event for golf. The Sync View technology will allow fans to see matchups from the gallery’s perspective.

5G network in South Korea is expected to create $27 billion in socioeconomic value in 2025, 1.5 percent of South Korea’s GDP and $42 billion, 2.1 percent of GDP, in 2030, according to a report released last month by the KT Economic and Management Research Institute.
