Huawei to invest £5 mn for 5G Innovation Centre

5G network forecast
Telecom network vendor Huawei has committed to invest £5 million for 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) that was opened at Guildford campus of the University of Surrey.

Huawei’s £5 million investment for the 5GIC will be part of the $600 million earmarked toward the global 5G research and innovation between 2014 and 2018.

The Chinese telecom network vendor has streamed an Ultra-High-Definition (Ultra-HD 4K) video to a mobile device over an enhanced outdoor mobile network jointly developed by Huawei and the 5GIC, said Huawei in a statement.

The company also showcased Internet of Things (IoT) applications over a 5G air interface via the test site it has helped install on the University’s campus.

In this test, a new 5G radio network architecture Radio Computing Architecture (RCA) that enables Network Slicing was applied to accommodate various 5G applications, including self-driving vehicles, remote healthcare, smart city services and Ultra-HD video streaming.

The field test of Sparse Code Multiple Access (SCMA) indicated that at least 300 percent more uplink IoT devices can be connected with the same bandwidth compared to 4G LTE. SCMA multiple access technology can be integrated with F-OFDM (filtered-OFDM), Massive MIMO (Massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output Antenna Technologies) and other 5G technologies.

Tong Wen, Huawei Wireless CTO, said: “We are committed to the research and development of future technologies that help build better connected societies, businesses and economies, and making 5G an essential part of this.”

The 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC), which has more than 170 researchers, has attracted over £70 million investment. The 5G test bed, located on the University’s Guildford campus, covers an area of four square kilometers.
