AT&T reveals 5G and fiber growth in 2022

AT&T today revealed its plans capital investment (not capital expenditure) of about $24 billion in 2023, consistent with 2022 levels.
AT&T 5G and fiber growth in 2022AT&T’s capital expenditures were $4.2 billion in Q4 and $19.6 billion in 2022. This compares with capital expenditures of $15.5 billion in 2021.

AT&T’s 5G Wireless business added 2.9 million postpaid phone connections in 2022. The U.S. carrier added 656,000 postpaid phone subscribers in the latest quarter.

AT&T generated Phone ARPU of $55.43 and Fiber ARPU of $64.82 in the fourth quarter of 2022. AT&T does not reveal the specific positive impact from the roll out of 5G network.

AT&T’s mid-band 5G spectrum covered 150 million people, more than two times higher than original end-of-year target.

AT&T said it is able to serve more than 19 million consumer locations and more than 3 million business customer locations in more than 100 U.S. metro areas with fiber.

AT&T revealed that fiber growth drives EBITDA and revenue gains, with fiber revenues up more than 30 percent. AT&T’s broadband revenues grew 7.2 percent due to fiber growth and higher ARPU from mix shift to fiber in 4Q22. Fiber ARPU of $64.82 increased 8.8 percent, with intake ARPU at the high end of the $65-$70 range.

John Stankey, AT&T CEO, said in its earnings report: “Our go-to-market strategy and the simplicity of our offerings drove robust, high-quality wireless and fiber customer additions. Over the last 10 quarters, we’ve demonstrated sustainable momentum in growing customer relationships, with 7.5 million postpaid phone net adds and 2.9 million AT&T Fiber net adds.”

AT&T has posted revenue of $31.3 billion, operating expenses of $52.4 billion and net loss of $21.1 billion in Q4 2022.
