Alcatel-Lucent in pact with KT for 5G network testing

Alcatel-Lucent announced its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KT to test technologies for introducing 5G mobile networks and infrastructure in the future.

As per the MoU, both Alcatel-Lucent and KT will focus on Alcatel-Lucent’s virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) technology that was demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress 2015, showing its capabilities in meeting changing customer, market and environmental demands while enhancing network performance and lowering costs.

KT aims to leverage the 5G to offer seamless mobile broadband experience, with new differentiated and personalized revenue-generating services. The deal will allow KT to meet the connectivity demands of the Internet of Things (IoT).

The scope of the MoU includes development and testing of mobile ultra-broadband access, network functions virtualization (NFV) and software defined networking (SDN) technologies for 5G network architectures and interfaces as well as the driving of interworking and 3GPP standardization activities.

DongMyun Lee, CTO of KT said: “We eager to use Alcatel-Lucent’s vRAN and SDN technology to help us implement the 5G architecture that we have defined in our GiGatopia Vision.”

Meanwhile, NI announced the opening of the Wireless Innovation Lab at its Austin headquarters – supporting collaborations with academic and industry research groups participating in its RF/Communications Lead User program. Researchers at Intel, Lund University, Nokia Networks, NYU Wireless, Samsung, The University of Texas at Austin and TU Dresden are driving research in 5G.
