The coverage of commercial 5G networks has reached 378 cities across 34 countries as of January 2020, according to the new VIAVI report. Deployments include both mobile and fixed wireless 5G networks.
The report did not reveal the specific details on the 5G mobile coverage.
South Korea is the country with the most cities with 5G available in 85 cities. 5G network reached 57 cities in China. Recent media reports indicated that China’s aspiration to take leadership in 5G business will be hit by the spread of coronavirus.
United States has 50 cities covered with 5G network. US wireless operators such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile US and Sprint have started launching 5G network across the United States.
United Kingdom has 31 cities covered with 5G network. Vodafone, Three, O2 Telefonica and BT / EE have launched 5G networks in select parts of the United Kingdom.
There are 24 5G cities in Saudi Arabia.
5G network is available in 15 cities across Spain.
There are 11 5G cities in the UAE.
Australia’s telecom operators have launched 5G services in 10 cities.
There are 10 5G cities in Germany. Deutsche Telekom was the first mobile operator to offer 5G service in Germany.
There are 10 5G cities in Romania.
In terms of regional coverage, EMEA leads with 168 cities where 5G networks have been deployed. Austria, Bahrain, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait, Latvia, Lesotho, Lithuania, Monaco, Poland, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden Switzerland, Oman, Qatar, UAE and UK have received 5G network coverage.
Asia is second with 156 cities. Mobile operators in Australia, China, Maldives, New Zealand and South Korea have launched 5G network in Asia.
54 cities across the Americas have received 5G coverage. Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay and the United States have received 5G network coverage.
