Telstra unveils 4G-ready Samsung Galaxy on its network

Telecom Lead Asia: Australian mobile operator Telstra has
unveiled its second 4G-capable Samsung Galaxy smart phone, in order to cater
demands of its speed-hungry customers.

Samsung Galaxy S II 4G will launch exclusively on the
Telstra mobile network. With the launch, the operator wants to strengthen its
foothold in the 4G market, before its rivals Optus and Vodafone can launch
their commercial 4G networks.

Optus is also planning to switch on its 4G network in
Newcastle next month, while Vodafone is in the trial stages of its 4G
capabilities, according to media reports.

Telstra said customers using the 4G-capable Samsung phone
would be able to access typical download speeds ranging from 2Mbps to 40Mbps
(up to three times the speed of the 3G network) and typical upload speeds from
1Mbps to 10Mbps in areas where its 4G network extends.

The operators’ 4G network is very important and vital for
the company, which is executing a strategy to boost mobile revenue to offset
the decline of its terminal fixed-line telephony business.

Telstra recently revealed that subscribers on 4G-enabled
devices had increased to 100,000 since the telco launched the first of those
devices late last year.

Recently, test and measurement major JDSU announced that Australia’s Telstra has selected
the JDSU HST-3000 handheld test solution to ensure quality video, data and
voice services.

Telstra selected
the HST-3000 for its ability to locate and proactively troubleshoot
service-impacting issues in its copper and ADSL network infrastructure. Telstra
provides services to more than 8.3 million fixed lines and 12.2 million mobile
customers.
