Malaysia surpasses 57 percent household broadband penetration

Malaysia surpassed 57 percent household broadband penetration at the end of the first quarter of 2011.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) plans to reach the 75 percent penetration milestone by the end of 2015 – a goal that is well within reach, according to a new report from Pyramid Research.

The Malaysian Communications Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has made increasing broadband connectivity a top priority, creating the National Broadband Initiative to foster development and adoption of fixed and mobile broadband services.

Among its main initiatives are the granting of rights to Telekom Malaysia (TM) to build Malaysia’s High-Speed Broadband (HSBB) network and cooperating with local governments on its Broadband for the General Population (BBGP) network.

Continued build-outs of mobile broadband networks will give operators capacity to improve service and add more customers,” said Emily Smith, analyst at Pyramid and author of the report.

Mobile connectivity will be an important means by which the MCMC will reach its goal of 75 percent household penetration in 2015, and it is a determining factor in our projected rise in data ARPS through the forecasting period.

Mobile data and fixed broadband will therefore be the most important sources of growth in Malaysia over the forecast period, with
CAGRs for the 2011-2016 period of 14.6 percent and 12.9 percent, respectively.

Pyramid believes that this goal will be well within reach, with 90 percent of all mobile subscriptions on 3G or 4G networks at that
time. However, mobile broadband continues to grow in popularity, and as the ecosystem around LTE matures Pyramid expects to see LTE absorb more first-time mobile broadband subscribers.
