Reliance Jio, India’s #1 4G service provider, announced that its customers can make voice and video calls over WiFi networks at no extra cost.
The free video and voice services over WiFi network will enable Jio customers to continue making voice and video calls using a WiFi network, instead of Jio VoLTE network. Voice calls would switch-over between Wi-Fi and VoLTE. 4G customers will be able to access any Wi-Fi for Jio’s Wi-Fi calling at no additional cost.
The service is supported on 150 handset models. Reliance Jio did not reveal the name of the handset models that support Jio’s Wi-Fi calling facility.
Akash Ambani, director of Reliance Jio Infocomm, said in a statement: “With a growing base of consumers, the launch of Jio Wi-Fi Calling will enhance every Jio consumer’s voice-calling experience, which is already a benchmark for the industry with India’s-first all VoLTE network.”
VoWiFi service enables the customers, and mobile service providers to use private wireless LANs (WLANs), home WiFi networks and public WiFi hotspot to connect calls to other mobile networks.
Jio’s Wi-Fi calling will enhance customer experience in areas where there is low connectivity and cellular signal.
4G customers of Wi-Fi Calling can easily make and receive calls over a WiFi network on their existing Jio phone number even if the mobile data is not on.
Bharti Airtel launched Wi-Fi Calling services in December 2019 in six states. Airtel lost 5.23 million mobile phone customers during the September quarter of 2019. On the other hand, Jio added 24.8 million mobile phone subscribers on its 4G network.
