Globe Telecom cuts energy use by 4.2% deploying Qualcomm’s AI-powered Edgewise

Globe Telecom has reduced its energy consumption by 4.2 percent, thanks to Qualcomm’s AI-driven solution, Edgewise, which optimizes the management of network equipment. This significant achievement demonstrates the power of AI technology in streamlining operations, reducing energy usage, and supporting sustainability efforts in the telecommunications industry.

Globe Telecom 5G network

For 2024, Globe Telecom has set a cash capital expenditure (capex) guidance of $1 billion, marking a reduction from $1.3 billion in 2023. Globe Telecom will be targeting lower Capex in 2025. In 2024, Globe Telecom is aiming to invest in building new cell sites, upgrading existing sites to 4G/LTE, rolling out 5G, fiber homes, and improving internet quality and coverage.

Smart Energy Management

Qualcomm’s AI-based Energy Efficiency Orchestration application dynamically adjusts Globe’s network operations based on real-time traffic and usage. This smart management ensures that energy use is optimized without compromising the quality of service, allowing Globe to continue providing top-tier connectivity while reducing its environmental footprint.

Environmental Commitment

This collaboration is a key part of Globe Telecom’s broader initiative to reduce carbon emissions and reach its ambitious goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The use of Qualcomm’s technology marks a major milestone in Globe’s sustainability efforts, aligning with its commitment to decarbonization and environmental responsibility.

Ongoing Innovation

The partnership between Qualcomm and Globe Telecom follows a savings-sharing model that promotes continuous improvement in energy efficiency. This model encourages both companies to work together to further refine the system, leading to even greater energy savings over time.

In collaboration with Amdocs, Qualcomm also announced an expansion of its RAN Automation platform, with the AI-powered Edgewise solution now fully operational across Globe’s nationwide network. This deployment, supported by AWS Cloud infrastructure, has been running for seven months, driving tangible benefits for both Globe’s environmental goals and operational efficiency.

Globe’s Joel Agustin, Head of Service Planning and Engineering, highlighted the positive impact of the solution: “Qualcomm’s AI-powered Energy Efficiency solution has enabled us to significantly reduce energy consumption across our RAN while maintaining optimal network performance for our customers.”
